Simple tips for self care during COVID 19

We are all feeling the disruptive force of coronavirus. Our day-to-day lives have been upended by COVID-19, an unprecedented pandemic event. But no matter how committed we are to practicing self isolation to flatten the curve, our innate, human need to connect with the world around us is stronger than ever.

The longer we stay home, the more crucial it becomes to attend to our physical and mental health. Call it self-care, call it mindfulness — tapping into methods for quieting our minds and caring for our bodies will help us cope and destress.

Looking for some easy-to-adopt mindfulness strategies, we turned to our most trusted experts: our fellow members at The Parlor NYC. Here’s how they are practicing coronavirus self care.

Dr. Darshan Shah, co-founder and medical director, Next Health: “Right now, it’s hard not to become addicted to the news, the numbers and the politics of COVID-19. It’s important to take a break from the deluge of bad news to take stock of what is happening for you personally. Look at the people who you are in quarantine with and think about your connection to them. How can you strengthen it? If you are by yourself, take more than just a moment to really get to know yourself. Look at your surroundings and get to know your home better. Do you remember when you bought it and how it made you feel when you purchased the items you are surrounded by? It's easy to zone out on Netflix, but activating your brain using mindfulness is time much better spent.”

Dr. Christine Blaine, founder and owner of Blaine Plastic Surgery: “In the moments when I’ve felt frustrated or anxious about the aspects of this crisis that I can't control, I take a moment to view the world through my children's eyes. I have three toddlers and they just live in the moment. They put 100% of their effort into whatever it is that is right in front of them. They don’t worry about the future or wish they could change things about the past. That perspective helps me realize that right now, in this very moment, we are safe and healthy, and everything is just fine.”
